Tour of Celery Flats and Hike at Bishop's Bog

When:

Saturday, May 17, 2008
10:30 a.m.

Details:

Spend the day with us exploring two unique areas of Portage, Michigan. First, we will start off with a guided tour at Celery Flats Interpretive Center and Historical Area. Settled by Dutch immigrants, Kalamazoo County was know as the "Celery Capital of the World" in large part due to the rich soil created by the areas' bogs and marshes. After a stop in downtown Portage for lunch, we will head south to explore one of the surviving bogs, Bishop's Bog. The trail is an easy 4.5 miles. Alternate shorter trails are available, and some sections are handicap accessible. Trails may be wet and buggy so bring appropriate shoes and insect protection, as well as something to drink.

Directions:

NEAR: Portage, MI

Meet at the Interpretive Center, 7335 Garden Lane. From I-94 South on Westnedge Avenue. Turn East on Garden Drive.
